Con-Way was established in 1929 as Consolidated Truck Lines.  The company was founded by Leland James in Portland, Oregon.

Contract Freighters, Inc. (CFI) was founded in 1951.  Contract Freighters was based in Joplin, MO and grew to be one of America’s largest truckload carriers.  In 2007, Con-Way bought CFI and merged it into Con-Way’s existing truckload addition.

Con-Way Inc. officially moved its corporate offices from San Mateo, California. to the Ann Arbor, Michigan in 2011.  Con-Way Freight was already located in Ann Arbor.  Con-Way Inc. moved from San Mateo because the Silicon Valley location was not an an advantage, and it increased costs.
